Hand knitting with fingers – Video Tutorial.

Knitting as a craft can seem intimidating to some, as it requires working with 2 needles and yarn. Not to mention the different ways of knitting from traditional style to continental style. For a knitting newbie like me, it was definitely overwhelming and confusing. So I thought I start with some technique that uses a bigger chunkier yarn, which might make it easy for me to understand the aspects of knitting.

That’s when I found out about hand knitting with fingers. It’s a very simple technique that uses only one action throughout. And the best part – it doesn’t require any tools!

All you need is some chunky yarn and your fingers!

Materials

For the sake of this tutorial, I have used the Chenille yarn from Pradhan Embroidery Stores, which is a bulky weight 6 yarn. You could also substitute this with the Bernat Blanket yarn or the LionBrand “I want to make a blankie” yarn.

The Technique

STEP 1

Make a slip knot.

Follow the directions below clockwise from top left to make a slip knot.

STEP 2

Make chains

Now that you have made the slip knot, creating the first loop, we will start making chains.  Hold the slip knot loop with the working yarn on the top and the tail end at the bottom. *Now Insert insert you finger into the loop from the front and pick up the working yarn from behind through the loop.* This will close the first loop creating a chain stitch, and form a new loop.  Now repeat the insrtuctions from * to * to create your second chain. Continue creating chains till the required number of chains are made as per the pattern.

Note: Make sure that the loops and chains created are not too tight or not too loose. For this type of yarn you can keep each loop size to around 3/4th inch in height.

Follow the directions below clockwise from top left.

STEP 3

Working in rows.

Now lay down the chains you have made horizontally withe the tail end on your left side. tAfter creating the last chain you will have one live loop left. Align the loop perpendicular to the horizontal line of chains. This will be considered as your first stitch.

We will now begin with row 1, where we will be working into each of the chains backwards till we reach the first chain that we created.

Row 1: *Now Insert insert you finger into the center of the chain from the front and pick up the working yarn from behind through the loop.* This will create a new live loop coming out from the chain below. Repeat the insrtuctions from * to * to create live loops through each of the chains. Continue till you reach back to first chain created.

Follow the directions below clockwise from top left.

STEP 4

Bind off

Bind off will basically close all the live loops from the last row to create a finished edge for your fabric.

Bind off row: Pull up loops into the first 2 stitches of a new row. Take the first loop over the second loop and pull the second loop through the first. *Now pull up a new loop in the next stitch, and pull the new loop through the previous loop.* Continue * to * till there is only one loop left. Chain 1 and fasten off.
